Here in part two of the strengthening your willpower series we talk about your heart rate variability (HRV).

A higher HRV improves your willpower. Here are the ways to improve your HRV.

  1. Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep at night. HRV is associated with your stress response. Without getting enough sleep, it increases your stress and subsequently makes your HRV worse.
  2. Eat a healthy diet. The lack of a poor diet decreases the stress on our bodies because our bodies don’t need to figure out what to do with the extra junk in the food.
  3. Decrease stress. Remove the unneeded extra stress in our lives by de-cluttering, eliminate unneeded tasks, etc.
  4. This will improve HRV all by itself.
  5. Improve attitude. Your perception of any situation can and will affect your willpower. If everything is negative, your willpower will be low. But if you can look at things as a positive this will increase your willpower and improve your HRV.
  6. Eliminate the temptation. If the temptation isn’t close by, you will have a harder time giving into it.
