Here’s Why You Lack Motivation

Have you ever felt like your motivation, or lack thereof, was keeping you from reaching your goals?

Over these 15 years that I’ve been coaching women to reach their fat loss goals motivation comes up a lot.

I’ll hear some women say they struggle to stick with a program because of a lack of motivation.

Others will say it’s hard to get started because the motivation just isn’t there.

Now, motivation by itself will NOT get you to your goal.

Its not a long-term solution.

Motivation instead is a strategic tool to help you get started and to help you get over major bumps in the road.

But here’s the major question.

Why do we lack the required motivation to get started or to get through the hard times?

Well, let me give you three major reasons why I see motivation wain in so many people.

The first reason comes down to…

You are not seeing results.

Look, why would you stick with a plan if it wasn’t getting you results?

We’ve all heard the cliché, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.”

Motivation grows with movement and progress.

If you are seeing the scale go down motivation stays strong. When it stays the exact same week after week and month after month, there’s no way motivation is going to stick around.

So to keep your motivation up you need to make sure you are seeing progress.

But more importantly than that, you need to understand what progress looks like for someone with PCOS.

I could ramble on and on about all the women I’ve coached who have lost 5 inches of their waist in a week, or 4 pant sizes in a few short months, but didn’t lose a single pound.

Did their motivation wain? You bet it did in the beginning. Until they realized their goal was to fit in that special dress or to wear those certain jeans… and they did it.

The second reason motivation can be lacking is…

We have the wrong expectations.

Tv shows like the “Biggest Loser” and certain fad diets have all taught us that we should expect huge weight drops each and every week.

The only thing is, you’ll never hear the “Biggest Loser” tell you that they are actually harming their contestant’s metabolisms with the rapid weight loss…

Let alone that a “week” on their show is equal to 3 to 6 weeks in the real world.

So, when I have a client lose 2 pounds a week for 6 weeks, they’ve actually lost more weight than most of the contestants on the biggest loser.

The other expectation we have is that we should see the scale go down each and every day…

And if it doesn’t, this means we are not seeing results.

This is magical thinking.

You see, our bodies have natural rhythms and cycles that we follow.

Some cycles are monthly, some are weekly, and some are daily…

And all of these cycles influence our weight.

Think about it… the way we live our lives from Monday through Friday is usually the same, but then we throw in the weekend and it all changes.

This is a normal cycle we follow week by week.

Just changes in our sleep schedule alone can cause our weight to go up or down a little.

So, back to our original point… if you expect to see the scale drop each and every week you will lose motivation FAST!

The last idea we’ll talk about today is my favorite…

We take the fun out of fat loss.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Losing weight doesn’t need to be bland and boring… or painful all the time.

Reaching our fat loss goals needs to include some of our favorite things.

If we are not eating our favorite foods… we’re doing it wrong.

If we dread the workout or our next meal… that should be a red flag.

Who would be motivated to keep going if they hated the whole process?

If you are doing these things listed above… taking the fun out of your program, expecting the wrong results, and not seeing results at all… you don’t have a motivation problem!

You have a program problem.

Stop focusing on improving your motivation and instead change your focus to a different way of doing things.

This is exactly why that in my programs I do not stick to a one-size-fits-all approach.

I look at things from a dozen different angles…

I use different approaches…

I use what works and what will keep you motivated when you need it but will help you have the determination when you don’t.
