Apple cider vinegar—the miracle cure for everything, right?
Not exactly. You’ve probably seen tons of blog posts about how apple cider vinegar cures everything from migraines to cancer.
I’m not here to pass on the idea that apple cider vinegar is a miracle fix-all. It’s not. Most of those ideas aren’t backed by science or evidence, and by now I think you know that I wouldn’t share anything with you that fell in that category.
But there are a couple of things we do know about apple cider vinegar, based on actual research.
#1: It slows down digestion of carbohydrates.
The great thing about that is that it helps maintain moderate blood sugar levels. Most women with PCOS also struggle with insulin, and keeping healthy blood sugar levels is important.
#2: The main ingredient of apple cider vinegar is acetic acid
Your body can use acetic acid in several different ways. It can be converted into ketones and other things that can benefit your body. But it does one other important thing—it suppresses your appetite.
So apple cider vinegar does two things that are important for women with PCOS. It helps with blood sugar and it helps with appetite control.
I want to be perfectly clear—apple cider vinegar does not make you lose weight. If I told you that, I would be lying.
I’m not here to peddle apple cider vinegar supplements or promise you a miracle weight-loss cure.
By itself, apple cider vinegar isn’t going to do anything for you. You can’t take it and refuse to make any other changes, then expect to see results.
But the benefits that it offers, combined with a healthy nutrition and exercise plan, can help women with PCOS.
I recommend taking two teaspoons with your meals. Combined with mindful eating, it will help you control your appetite and avoid overeating. (Note that you don’t need to take it if you’re skipping a meal. Its purpose is to suppress your appetite. It doesn’t do anything by itself.)
I’m always going to be upfront and honest with you about anything I recommend. Anything I say is based on science, driven by research, and up to date.
I have one more important tip coming next time about appetite control, and that one is all about cravings.
