Stress and Rest

Women come to me all the time and say, “Okay, I’m exercising three hours a day, and I’m eating nothing at all, and I’m not seeing any results. What do I do? Do I need to exercise more?”

I think that our thought process on seeing results is a little backwards.

Where do results come from? If we want to lose fat, when does our progress actually occur?

The truth is that results do not come from the gym.

Now, I can see a lot of red flags popping up from that statement but let me explain.

Exercise is definitely important because it is the key that ignites progress and change in our bodies.

Just like car keys. We can’t start our car without a key, and we can’t get anywhere unless we turn our car on.

Exercise simply begins the process for our body to make changes and eventually see results.

But when do we actually see results?

We see results when we’re resting.

Stress and Rest

If you’re not seeing results after trying absolutely everything, getting proper rest to allow your body to recover may be what you are lacking! This is why we have to learn how to manage our stress and our rest during this whole process of burning fat with PCOS.

So what do I mean by stress? Stress is anything that causes our bodies to have to do something different than what it is used to. Dieting and exercise are examples of good physical stress that we put on our bodies.

When we rest, our bodies continue to go through the process that is ignited from the stress we put our body through. If we keep exercising too long, our bodies have a harder time getting the recovery that we need.

This is why I tell my clients to rest. I’ve had multiple conversations with women where I tell them to take a week off and just do light activity. If you’re hitting the gym for 2 hours every day but you aren’t seeing results, you need to rest.

Getting the Sleep We Need

A key component to rest is our sleeping schedule. I am surprised at the number of people I talk to who don’t think about their sleep at all, or don’t worry about their sleep. We’re always thinking about diet and exercise, but we fail to focus on the positive health benefits we receive from sleep.

If we’re not sleeping, then we’re raising our stress levels which affects our ability to burn fat and see results.

For many of us, we need to set up an effective routine for sleep. What are we doing right before we go to bed? Are we watching TV? Are we on our phone? If we are, we need to get off those things. Doing so will result in better sleep which allows our bodies to recover from the stress we put it through that day.

Set a specific time you go to bed every night and be sure to wake up on a set schedule as well. Our bodies thrive when we have a set routine.

Create Time to Relax

The last thing that I would recommend doing is create some time to relax. This can be in the form of meditation, journaling, or any other way that you relax. Put the phone away, eliminate distractions, and clear your mind.

My mind often races at night with the various things that I have to do the next day. To help clear my mind, I simply write down those tasks and set it aside. Doing that helps clear my mind of those things and helps me get a better night of sleep.

Everyone does a great job focusing on exercise. Everyone does a great job focusing on diet. We need to make sure we’re also focusing on our rest and that we’re getting the sleep we need.

As we do this, we’ll see better results.
